Introduction

Due to its invaluable significance as a means of communication, language throughout history, has received much attention. Language nowadays is of paramount importance in the age of information, globalization, political changes and cultural dialogue. Educational and cultural institutions assume their responsibilities in maintaining a balance between the cultural heritage and openness manifest in learning international languages.

In congruence with the prudent vision of his Majesty King Abdullah II in improving the quality of education and providing opportunities for learning international languages, the Hashemite University (HU) has established the Language Center at the beginning of the 2005-2006 academic year, adding a new dimension to the University mission.

Mission Statement

The Language Center at HU has a profound mission in meeting the needs of different faculties and the local community. Promoting openness, enhancing cultural awareness, and translating Arabic literary master pieces into international languages and vise versa are central to the mission of the Center.

Goals and Responsibilities
1. Teaching mandatory Arabic and English language courses.
2. Teaching Arabic to non-natives.
3. Teaching foreign languages for specific purposes.
4. Offering remedial language courses.
5. Coordinating and running special language sessions for TOEFL, IELTS and GRE.
6. Providing language consultations at national and international level.
7. Translating literary and cultural Arabic works into international languages and vice versa.

The Facilities of the Center
The Center has the following facilities:
1. State-of-the-art language laboratories.
2. Computer labs.
3. An American studies resource room.
4. Data show classrooms.

Future Expectations
1. Launching new Arabic language programs for non-natives, viz., masters, one-year, and one-semester programs.
2. Establishing some European and Asian resource and studies rooms.
3. Widening the scope of cooperation with language centers and different educational institutions locally and abroad.
